" You need to find Eggert the Mad to complete Darkthorne's request. This is a Combat quest.  Membership is required to begin this quest.

Find Eggert the Mad Save Eggert from the Grave Elemental Speak with Eggert the Mad

When you have saved Eggert, Vittorio and his two cohorts appear and take the contents of box from you. So it seems that the box contained a poison.
