In Rift a Role is a save-slot for your spec. For instance, you could have one configuration, or spec, that is for Tanking, while a second Role is for DPS. With one Role purchased you can switch between two specs at any time so long as you are not in combat. You can purchase a maximum of four additional Role slots for a total of five.

Once you have added a second Role you will see Roles as a tab on your Abilities (P) window. The icons can be dragged to your hotbar to make Role-switching easier. When you switch Roles the system remembers all the hotbars you had defined for that role the last time you used it.

On your Souls Tree screen you can rename your Roles, as well as doing most of the work for setting up a newly-purchased Role. To rename the Role, click on the pencil to the right of the default Role name, then click on the name and re-type it, then click the pencil again.
