A Main Tank, often abbreviated MT, is a heavily-armored fighter with specific abilities (like Taunts) designed to gain and hold Aggro. In a group or raid the MT is not expected to do lots of damage (DPS); his sole job is to make sure all the mobs are hitting him instead of the squishies, so that they can do the damage without dying, and so that the healers only have to heal one target. This is crucial to longevity and group/raid success.
