Mob is short for Mobile or Mobile Object, a term that goes all the way back to text-based Multi-User Dungeons (MuDs,) which are the predecessors to today's MMORPGs.
In World of Warcraft, Mobs are also called Creeps and represent any monster or non-player entity that is in the game for the sole purpose of opposing the players and being slain. Unlike other NPCs, MoBs often share the exact same generic name and very similar appearance to the MoBs like them nearby.
