An expansion is additional software that provides additional content and features.

Details

The content of an expansion is typically unavailable for players who do not own the actual expansion and/or it's related serial or key. The majority of game expansions will not install or run as stand-alone products and require the original game or product to upgrade from, such as in the case of World of Warcraft (the original product launch, or "basic game") and The Burning Crusade (the expansion}.
