When you click the Altar of the Gods you will be attacked by waves of Rune Guardians. I ran when I counted 8 after the second wave. The crystal apparently does not update until you either defeat the guardians.
I do not think you can simply outlast them. I spam-healed through the first two waves and was doing okay, but the third wave upped their DPS to more than I could heal.
