Just solo'd this dude with my 70 druid. Fight lasted a while, he has quite a few HP. Needed to heal myself several times, plus have a weapon that procs group heal. Self buffed, with 53 chanter haste (who came along to leech XP, the chanter died during 3rd ramp), druid rezzed him before the kill so he could get xp.
Dropped Intricate Defiant Silk pants, Crushed Emerald, Crushed Black Marble, Exquisite Gold Gem Dusted Rune, and the "Why am I going to even waste my time with tributing this cloak?" cloak.

My 68 war took this guy down to like 20% solo. I am wondering how many hit points he's got because I must have taken him for 50K HP before I died.

This thing was somehow slashing (MELEE) me from absurd distances...I was so far away I couldn't cast on him, or my pet, and even took off around several turns, yet he was still slashing me, from what would be a distance of 100 YARDS or more in real life. This is while it was meleeing with my pet in one spot. Absurd. LB to me, yet destroyed me.

Ok, I'm board o death (rog 70, 11k hp), Levi and jump to the well to check this area. every thing is light blue to me and all of a sudden i see this guy.... Dark blue, checking eqbeastiary.allakhazam for info.. all i'm getting is error. so i decided to try him while i'm still lfg... Hit me for 240 max, Rampage, Resisted his "SMASH Spell" like 4-5 times. Fight is looking good, i'm at 60% and he is around 10%; Didn't even see the Enrage message but yes i start going down and he was still at 8-10%... Hit Deffensive got him killed when i was at 18%... Dropped Cloak of the cave bear..

After tha we did pull ol' Grizz inta t'large expanse tha t'skeles used t'sleep in an he did knock me an anoter Paladin about fer a spell. Grizznot did finally fall - a sad day Ah must say.

Our group of six killed him last night. Level 65 beastlord (and warder), level 61 paladin, level 62 shaman, level 64 druid (me), level 56 warrior, and level 51 druid. I was main healer but had (and needed) lots of help to keep meleers alive through rampages. No casualties.
He dropped Grizznot's claws.

whats with the Grizznot and grizzleknot names and all that? you know Grizzleknot the treeant... is that like a shuffle of a programers name or something? I dont get it... grizznot gizzleknot... maybe it is part of a quest? you bring the bear cloak to the long lost brother of the badger...thing... a treeant... who then... um... does stuff thats good... and EQ then ends for all players?

Is this cloak used for part of a quest? As it stands, this cloak is not worth the code it took verant to write to add it in the game.

This guy can be done with a single group. Did him with War, Cle, Shm, Wiz, Dru, Nec all 60, no fatalities aside from the bear
One of the Coldain had fallen in the pit (the guy you do hand in of 7th shawl) and was healing the bear to make things a little more exciting.
Kept the pathetic cloak incase it ends up used in a quest some day

I thought it would be fun to explore Icewell and check out quests among other things. 1st mistake. So I walked up the frozen stairs hoping to catch a glimpse of Dain. 2nd mistake. Well I thought that the big blue thing in the middle would give me a good view. LAST mistake. SPLASH!!!!
I got lucky and managed to run all the way to this guy before the casters finally took me down. A few pp, a casket, and 1 necro later im back and will nvr ever explore again.....

I recently had the misfortune to fall down the well in the Dain's room. Never having been there before, I was unaware of the trap. I was lucky enough to be able to Feign Death my entire way from the well to the zone back into Thurgadin. Just thought I'd share a short excerpt from my log file during that journey:

I have looked at what this bear drops and heard how hard he is and if you ask me i think he is defeintly NOT worth killing

we just killed him. he dropped that cloak..and a crushed topaz...but he DID not have ANY faction associated with him

btw 3 groups of 55+ mostly tanks. chain heal on main tank with him/her as only taunter. no casualties *cheers*

If you see this guys drops you will understand why he isn't worth it. It took us for parties of primarily 53+ and we dropped him. We had 5 clerics which helped, but he still left half our people dead, and several frostspikes walked in which we had to kill after the fight with diminished stregnth and numbers as well as a few other skellies, golems, and cubes that were mezzed. Hits for 300, and spends 75% of the fight on a rampage. When we initially attacked him I saw "Grizznot goes on a Rampage" 4 times in 10 seconds, and about every 5 seconds after that. If you are the lucky chanter that gets to tash him or shaman that slows him, be ready to get summoned and die.

We worked our way to his cave with a raiding team of about 22 people, average level 52ish.
I (a 52 shaman) burned my whole bar of mana and he resisted everything I threw at him (mostly Turgurs). A 52 druid said he got one through... but I did not ask what specifically.
Anyway... the tally was (I think) 13 dead, 9 evac... didn't even get the bear half-way dead.
Approach only well prepared with greatest caution.
We worked our way to his cave with a raiding team of about 22 people, average level 52ish.

Tis' Grizznot be a large, LARGE bear, certainly vicious. He is located down the way from the well, not far. One day I stumbled into teh well, to be viciously eatin up by a frosticube...I went to recover my corpse (as I am a rogue), I jumped down into teh well..with hide and sneak of course, and got my corpse outta there.
I snuck out of teh Cavern...through the only passage I am aware of. You shall walk along a tunnel (not very far) and you shall come upon him, heh, you can't miss him. From the well, you HAVE to pass him, which is quite difficult as he SEES THROUGH HIDE AND SNEAK SO PROBABLY INVIS TOO*warning. I was quite terrified by this gigantic bear....he looks like a bear in teh Eastern Wastes standing up....only about 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 times as large...he is HUGE.
As the only way through appeared to be past him I cautiously snuck my way around him...very hard...you HAVE to stick to the walls or he will aggro and eatz you up.
I died shortly thereafter by a pair of halfling eating Frostspikes...beware, the can see thorugh hide and sneak too. Much luck in your ventures!!!
