Having only killed him once, I don't know what else he might drop. Obretl is red to a 19, but his pet cons blue.
Obretl drops charred bone chips, which are a component of the Fright Forged Helm quest in Paineel. The helm is AC 11, +2 Str, +4 Wis, -5 Cha, Effect: Deadeye, ERU HUM CLR only.
A really sweet helm, one of the best outside the plains for an Erudite or Human cleric. Too bad us dwarves can't use it. Obretl fears and dots you, as a warning. He cons indifferent, and will tell you "this place is not for the living, get out!" or some such, if you hail him. He spawns at the little temple in the souther edge of the desert. As for rarity, I've seen the AC spawn 6 times while I've fought in South Ro. Obretl has only spawned once and no one in my guild had ever heard of him...

Popped twice so far while im trying to make the ac pop (ive been doing it for 5 hrs) decided to kill cause name looked interesting.

During time camping AC I killed this guy in the tower and I actually destroyed the charred bone chips thinking they were useless.
Didn't realise they were for a good quest, I thought it would be for a rubbish newbie one nobody bothered with.

There is no trigger spawn for Obretl, having killed every single undead creature in South Ro and having Sense the Dead detect nothing at times. The fact is Obretl won't spawn if one of his placeholders in the undead tower are in his place. The spawn time there is eight Norrath hours, and the chances of it being Obretl are /random 1 100. Furthermore the undead there will not despawn, perhaps having something to do with the ancient cyclops at 8 PM( but I must have killed every single type of undead there, from a crypt mummy to a ghoul, so I seriously doubt that's the case unless Obretl himself is who you are suppose to kill at 8 PM, but I sure didn't wait till 8 PM to find out)Having camped him for seven hours, I finally had him spawn when I was about to camp and go to bed. Dropped two bronze daggers and the bone chips you need for the Cleric Quest in Paineel, which I had my human Priest of Bertoxxulous loot. Next stop, Lesser Faydark!

At lvl 46 I ran into him and killed him , never seen him before so what the hey. Drops Char bonechips.. no drop. He must be pretty rare tho was the only time I have seen him in the little undead ruin where a drybone or mummy most of the time pop.

like everyone else here who camped the ac and saw him 40 thousand times but no ac... obretl is not so much *rare* as triggered. simply kill whatever is in the tower and eventually you will get him to pop. also note i was killing all the undead in the desert and spiders so that may also have something to do with it.

"a crypt mummy" is not the ph....its not a unique spawn either. For lack of any better info, i thought I would give this a try. For 4 hours, not a single mummy was left living in SRo for longer then 60seconds (ranger with 200 tracking will easily prove there are more then one "a crypt mummy" up on many occasions). Even after all this mummy killing...I have still yet to see him spawn. I've seen 7 AC pops tho. So either it has a trigger which isnt killed during the mass killings people are doing trying to get the ac to spawn, or its just such a rare chance of him spawning that you can go hours on end without a spawn.
Last night I saw "crypt mummy" spawn in the temple and I saw on track "a dervish cutthroat" with a lowercase "d". All others on track were "a Dervish Cutthroat".
Anyone know more about these two mobs? I've seen the "crypt mummy" on only one other occasion.

Obretl is a random spawn. He's just rare.
I've seen him twice while clearing the AC phs. He just popped on E'ci before I logged to come check what he was for again.
He pops in the tower, and has a pet, as mentioned.

I can't continue to believe that this is a random spawn, it's just too damn rare. However, I have no idea what the trigger is. I do know it's not triggered by the quest in Paineel, though.

IMO this is for everyone except chanters(hmmm i think i'll mez this mob with the -25 cha...doh) and monks(hmm i'll just keep this 10lbls here) and as for it being just sk good idea, im sure no wis/int(except for chanters) casters would want the 10 int/wis or the 100 mana/hp, and what tank(other than monks) would want a free 10 ac/str/sta to add to their equipment......my solution have everyone except monks/chanters type /random 0 1000....

I sat at the tower killing PHs for 8 hours, logged for an hour to eat, and when I came back I was looking at his corspe where someone had just killed him. He was kind enough to leave the chips since he didn't know what they were for.
Now if I could just find that damned dr00d (2 weeks and counting...)

Killed him today whilst walking around SRo,was blue to me at 29. Quite easy, he dropped 2 carnelians and the charred bone chips quest component.

However, I've looted the AC ring twice and have received 20,000pp in return. It is possible to dual quest the JBoots. I hand in the ring, the other person hands in the rest, they get JBoots and I get more pp than you could ever possibly make charging for SoWs. It gives me great pleasure to see that someone who is destroying AC rings simply to make pp, has in fact destroyed tens of thousands of pp that they could have made, while making someone else happy with JBoots. Kindness is always rewarded, your greed has cost you.

There are numerous others who will sow just about anyone that passes by. If I'm not kiting or grouping and have mana to spare, I'll sow everyone in my surrounding area and those who run by (if I can target them and finish the cast before they're out of range).
On occasion they'll throw a few plat my way, which is a nice bonus.

Lias camps da SRo fer days wiv no luck. Den he running to Guk one day and right bump into AC and eat him. After Guk he run north - meet Obretl. Pretty gud luk fer one day. Anyway, Lias kill Obretl on principle and destroy da charred wotsits. No way he letting some lame Erud or Hummie get a cool Helm. Hur! Hur!

Obretl had roughly 600hp, and was green to me at level 36.

I wondered what to do with my embalming dust that was dropped by Mummies which I wacked, which then lead me here.
I believe Dreadbone Skeletons in Kunark's Field of Bone pit drop Charred Bone chips and not just regular skeleton type bone chips. It would seem a tad easier and with less painful ramifications.
I have a young Swifttail Iksar, but he's not quite ready to go chase the RED skeletons without help.

"Charred Bone Chips" do not drop in Kunark. There are two different items that drop there that are very similar (and cause a lot of confusion).
"Charred Bone Shards" drop off the militia skeletons in the field of bone.
"Worn Charbone"s drop off of charbone (and possibly lesser and greater charbone) skeletons in various zones in Kunark.

Just today, my guild and I were waiting for AC to spawn (Jboots for everyone!) And we brought him in, I picked up the charred bones, hoping for some charred armor quest or such, now, is that helm No Drop, as I am curious because my warrior, not my cleric char picked em up... PS: we killed 6 SG's that day =)

Today, both him and his pet were blue to me at 24. After a Harmony, and Dismissed Summoned and Crud spells on the pet, I promptly lost my wolf form, feared, blood boiled, and other nasty stuff cast upon me. Three fears later, the pet was one bubble down, Obretl was obviously full, and I was waking up outside Mistmore.

He cons blue to a level 30, his pet's green by then. We traded DOTs (I'm an SK) and he took me down 2 bubbles before he died. Unfortunately he died to my DOTs while I was feared so the corpse poofed. >:|
He's tough for his level, that's for sure. Not a huge number of HPs or anything, just the usual necromancer nastiness. If you fight him, ignore the pet and concentrate on nuking/beating him down fast- fear kite him if you can so he can't cast. Be aware that he'll try the same thing with you. :)

I aggro'd him by mistake (attack lesser mummie nearby and didn't see him in the tower). I'm currently 15th lvl Necro. He killed my pet in seconds, and me in a few more seconds. Might be higher lvl than indicated here.
