Killed this guy 6/23/2010 with just myself(85 SK, 4k AA) and the merc. Was able to go alone up till about 70 % when my train died off, then started going between 2.0 and merc and vamp mode and such. Took about 50-55 mins, blew HT twice, had to resummon merc 2 or 3 times. This fight was no push over, was pretty disced out, 20 % mana, merc dead for the 3rd or 4th time, when porthio finally fell. I'll have to try a dragon next time, at least it won't have a stupid cat with it.

killed with 3 people. monk, rogue and monk (bot). 3 mercs of course too. one monk tanked both and we took porthio to 80%, then we all switched to take out nightshade. kept 2 mercs up on efficient and balanced, then added 3rd merc later when 1st got to 50%. fight took a bit over 20 mins. Main monk tower gear, rogue also tower geared. 2nd monk T5 group geared.

lvl of this mob is def. wrong, we tryd him yesterday and he coned red at 75, so he has to be at least 78th lvl + , my guess would be something around 80th

ok we killed this guy today 11/9 and nightshade didnt spawn is this a known problem or bug or did we just do something wrong? any help would be appricietaed got jipped out of our staffs but still got ez loot
I believe this item is a task reward for "Entrance into Daosheen's Chamber" -- not a drop. The task does involve killing Porthio, however.

Although Crystals are a task rewared, I've also seen Porthio drop them.

Crystals of the Firstborn is also a drop from Porthio.
He also drop Black Orb of Porthio the Second in addition to the ones recieved from the task.

The way we do it is. Have MT (Warrior) Tank porthio. And Knights (Pal/SK) Tank the cat. Clerics Heal MT. Druid/Shams Heal Knights. Keep cat AWAY from Porthio. Because he has mean AoE Ramp. Kill Porthio First. Then finish cat.

Ok EQ change how to pull this grp. So who do you pull to kill him. after you get him and cat do you Kill the cat or Porthio the Second Born? My guild been doing Porthio but we only get him to 75%hp then wipe sould we kill cat first then work on him or stay on Porthio and hope the cat does not wipe Clerics? can any one tell me what we should do pls!

Each guild does it their own way.. but if you kill the cat, you lose rampages, manadrain AE, quasi-DT from the cat etc..
If you kill Porthio 1st, then you still have a crazy memblurring cat to deal with.
Once Nightshade is dead, Porthio becomes just a trash mob with a bunch of HP.

Know this is an old post- but don't kill the cat first. He is a tonne harder than Porthio and will take longer to kill.

I have not seen him drop Crystals of the Firstborn. Rather after you get three dragon teeth from the large named dragons and part of Porthios staff from Nightshade, you turn them in to the apprentice mage in Arcstone for the book, which lets you enter Daosheens chamber.
I know. Wolfsclan has killed him countless times and the crystals have dropped only once.
